LOS ANGELES, July 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Early this morning, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Montana, just northwest of the state capital Helena and southeast of Lincoln. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that there is a low likelihood of damage and no injuries have been reported. As local residents check their homes for possible damage, Farmers Insurance® reminds customers to also review their policies for an earthquake endorsement.
"Under most circumstances, a standard homeowners policy does not cover damage caused by an earthquake," said Jeff Paggi, territory product lead for Farmers Insurance. "Homeowners should review the coverage they have purchased and talk to their agent about whether or not they have the appropriate endorsement to cover damage from an earthquake."
An endorsement is a written provision that adds to, deletes, or modifies the provisions of the original insurance contract, noted Paggi. In the case of an earthquake endorsement, the homeowner would be responsible for an additional premium to purchase coverage for damage to their property from an earthquake.
Farmers® customers who suffered damage from the earthquake and have added an earthquake endorsement to their policy should file their claims at www.Farmers.com, via the Farmers Insurance Claims app, or by calling the 24-hour claims center. Customers who are unsure as to whether or not they have the endorsement are urged to contact their Farmers agent.
