Los Angeles, Calif. (October 16, 2014) – Stifling heat can make it difficult for anyone to focus on their tasks. So imagine the difficulty many students across Hawaii have when temperatures in their classrooms reach 100 degrees.
Recently, Farmers Insurance Hawaii received a plea from students at Campbell High School. The request was simple, they needed fans to help cool down their classrooms, which often experience temperatures of near 100 degrees, or more, inside. As a long-time supporter of schools and education in the state, Farmers Hawaii reached out to the Hawaii Department of Education to get a clearer picture of the need across the Islands. Based on those conversations, a list of eight high priority schools was identified and a plan developed to secure and donate 200 fans to the local school campuses.
“We, at Farmers Insurance Hawaii, are committed to supporting the education needs of our community. We understand the heat’s adverse effects on the learning environment and through our local Farmers Fans for Education program, we are pleased to help provide a more comfortable learning environment to improve the concentration, productivity, and academic achievement for our keiki and youth,” said Melanie Joseph, marketing manager for Farmers Insurance Hawaii. “We want to provide some relief from the heat allowing students and teachers to benefit from cooler classrooms.”
After receiving the request from the students at Campbell High School, Farmers Hawaii obtained a list of schools in dire need of cooling devices from the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE). Farmers Hawaii will donate fans to the top eight high priority schools on the DOE’s list that are scheduled to receive air conditioning once funding becomes available from the state.
Farmers Hawaii is hopeful that the donation of the fans will help alleviate some of the intense heat inside the classrooms until additional help comes. Cooler classrooms will help improve student concentration and cognitive ability, improving academic performance, as well as helping teachers benefit from cooler working environments.
Farmers Insurance Hawaii wishes to thank City Mill, Company, Ltd., the 115-year old family-owned and locally operated hardware home center, for supplying and delivering the fans to the schools for the Farmers Fans for Education program.
Farmers Hawaii presented the fans to Campbell High School today and the remaining fans will be delivered to the other seven schools next week.

- Ilima Intermediate
- Campbell High
- Aikahi Elementary
- Kaimiloa Elementary
- Nimitz Elementary
- Mokulele Elementary
- Pearl Harbor-Kai Elementary
