The Tucson Children's Museum and Farmers Insurance will award over $6,000 in academic scholarships and other prizes to 34 local student winners of the Farmers Insurance Young Americanos Youth Photography Competition at a special ceremony on Friday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Tucson Children's Museum, 200 6th Avenue, Avenida Cesar Chavez in Tucson. The Farmers Insurance Young Americanos Photography Competition encouraged students from kindergarten through the 12th grade to photograph Latino Life in Southern Arizona. The photo contest was held in partnership with the Tucson Children's Museum, the Tucson Newspapers/Newspapers in Education program and the Tucson Hispanic Coalition. In addition to receiving valuable awards, the Tucson Children's Museum has also agreed to feature the winning photographs in a special exhibition through August 20.
Sharing the $1,000 Grand Prize cash scholarship are Antonio Mezquita, a 6th-grader from Roskruge Elementary School and Sean Butts-Madrid, a 12th grader from Tucson High Magnet School.
The winning photographs will also be available for viewing at the award- winning website www.youngamericanos.net beginning May 16.
"These photographs are outstanding. The students have truly captured what Latino life is like in Southern Arizona," said Andy Reser, state executive director for Farmers Insurance. "Every student, their families and their teachers should be proud of the students' accomplishments."
The Farmers Insurance Young Americanos Youth Photography Competition was developed by Farmers as a companion piece to AMERICANOS: Latino Life in the United States, a critically-acclaimed photography exhibition, jointly produced by the Smithsonian Institution and noted actor/activist Edward James Olmos. The AMERICANOS exhibition recently exhibited at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona campus.
